It is definitely related to DNS.
A simple query shows a SERVFAIL, which means my DNS was unable to retrieve a record from the listed nameservers at the domain registrar. This could mean the nameservers are down, my connection to them are down, or there is a problem with the DNS record for that particular domain.
- Code:
[jwoosley@fusion ~]$ nslookup bigbangbar.org
Server: 127.0.0.1
Address: 127.0.0.1#53
** server can't find bigbangbar.org: SERVFAIL
I next tried to query the nameserver on file for the bigbangbar.org directly and it returns REFUSED, which means I was able to communicate with the name server, but they rejected my query. The problem might be due to an access control list that is applied to the domain and it is not allowing certain IP addresses from performing queries, or some sort of misconfiguration.
- Code:
[jwoosley@fusion ~]$ nslookup bigbangbar.org 209.159.145.144
Server: 209.159.145.144
Address: 209.159.145.144#53
** server can't find bigbangbar.org: REFUSED
It appears that google's public DNS is unaffected, so I wonder if they're using cached information, or if there is an exception in the ACL on BBB's DNS server which allows google queries. Regardless, this will have to be addressed, or people will continue to have issues.
- Code:
[jwoosley@fusion ~]$ nslookup bigbangbar.org 8.8.8.8
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: bigbangbar.org
Address: 209.159.145.244
